Q&A
1. Usually, we think of a “text” as something that is unitary and singular: the whole is greater than the parts. How has approaching texts (longer writing projects) in pieces changed my thinking of what a “text” is?
I have come to realise that forming “texts” is a process. A “text” formulation is not a single step but a part of the whole communication cycle. This includes planning, data gathering, data sifting, data analysis, data formulation, revision, and data reporting. Additionally, a text formulation, as a step, requires that the writer must consider the word structure, time-constraints, audience, stakeholders, and above all else, the purpose for the text.
Example: A text can be in the form of one paragraph or it can be presented in a book. Regardless of its form, the above will still be required to ensure that the purpose is met and that the audience understands it.
2. Some people - mistakenly - believe that writing well is a talent: you can either do it or you cannot. However, the methodical, modular approach to writing in this class shows us how we can carefully manage each element of a piece of writing and orchestrate many smaller pieces to achieve a singular purpose. Writing becomes a craft, and it becomes a craft that is potentially accessible to anyone. Has this approach changed my own sense of myself as a writer?
Yes – Having a specific method defines the writer’s style. However, it must be noted that in order to be a good writer, one must be flexible enough to adapt to other methodical approaches, especially, if the audience is of a certain group. Therefore, each method should consider the type of audience for whom the text is written; moreover, one should consider the platform from where the text will be delivered.
3. How? (Referring to the above)
Having a certain method in writing is a useful approach that I have grown to appreciate in my own writing. This limits mistakes, and allows the writer to have a glimpse to the possible perspective of the audience. Therefore, the method of breaking down the project into smaller pieces enables the writer to focus on each subtopic at a time, thus, also confirming the validity and credibility of the project.
Example: In writing this project and using the modular method, I ensure that each section is clear and addressed with absolute attention. I make sure I plan for each section and also revise each section accordingly. This helps to break the flow, thus, allowing me to observe mistakes should there be some.
